There is some genetic differentiation among some of the wild populations. Thus, populations from 3 localities (Quito, Tumbaco, and Los Chillos) are not being mixed in captivity. Found animals at Centro Jambatu were collected from three different localities. The city of Quito declared this as a flagship species.
